“Community Week” Recap!

Hello all,

Community Week has come and gone and boy, was it great!  Read on below to learn all about the fun that was had and learning that took place!

On Monday and Tuesday, the students enjoyed splish-splashing around at the local Water/Sprinkler Park!  As you can see from the photos, the students clearly had a blast!

The students kicked off Wednesday by defining the word, “Community”.  Through a discussion, it was determined that a community is a group of people who live in one place called a neighborhood.  The teachers explained that the students would spend the week discussing, learning about and even meeting some of the people that are considered community helpers!  Of particular interest were the brave Fire Fighters who help keep us safe!  To help build excitement for Friday’s field trip to the local Fire House, the students created a special Fire Dog for their art project on Wednesday.

Thursday marked the first field trip of the 2013 PPA Summer Camp as the students headed to the Liberty Science Center!  The students could hardly believe their eyes as they explored and investigated the various exhibits of the center including, but not limited to: Our Hudson Home, Block City, Skyscrapers!, Eat and Be Eaten, and IExplore!  Whether they were touching snake skin, making bubbles, constructing block cities, or just plain having fun, it was clear that the students LOVED their time at the LSC!  Be sure to visit the link located at the bottom of this blog post to view all of the photos from Thursday’s trip!

The students, teachers, and some PPA parents spent the morning with some of Jersey City’s bravest Firefighters at the local Firehouse!   The firefighters really pulled out all the stops for the PPA kids!  Captain Jim and his firefighting team did a phenomenal job explaining the different ways to stay safe in a fire.  To help stay cool, the students spent the morning exploring the inside of the air-conditioned fire house where the firefighters led them on a complete tour!  From the kitchen, the gym, the locker room, to the bedrooms, the students really learned what it is like to “live” at the firehouse!  As if touring the firehouse and climbing aboard a fire truck wasn’t exciting enough, the students were in shock to learn that the firefighters had gifts to present to the students!  Each student left the firehouse with their very own fire hat!  The students were so appreciative of the firefighters hard work and generosity.  What an amazing trip it was!  Be sure to look below for some of the photographic highlights from the incredible and important field trip!
