Hello all,
“Jungle Week” has come and gone and boy, was it great! Read on below to learn all about the fun that was had and learning that took place!
The students arrived at school on Monday with a lot of enthusiasm and one thing on their mind – the Zoo field trip on Friday! “Are we going to the zoo TODAY?” was the question that was heard all week long. The teachers reminded the students about their “Days of the Week” song. With four days until Friday, the students were a bit disappointed – but not for long! Little did the students know that “Jungle Week” would turn out to be, by far, the most exciting and busiest week of camp yet!
On Monday and Tuesday morning, the students headed out to the Water Park and Playground for some fun in the sun! Take a look below to see the students in action!
Upon their return to school on Monday, the students got right to work to create the first jungle-themed art project of the week – a jungle parrot with pizazz! In order to do so, the students started by painting glue onto the body of the parrot then adding colorful glitter of their choice! Of course, beautiful and colored feathers were added as well!
Upon their return to school on Tuesday, the students assembled various jungle animal foam puppets! Whether they chose a monkey, an elephant, or a lion – they all turned out great!
Wednesday was a very exciting day at PPA! The students were visited by three representatives from Jersey City Medical Center – E.M.T. Lacy, E.M.T. Erik, and Nurse Marissa! As their names suggest, E.M.T. Lacy and E.M.T. Erik are EMTs or Emergency Medical Technicians and Nurse Marissa is a nurse! The students loved hearing about the important job E.M.T. Lacy, E.M.T. Erik, and Nurse Marissa do in our community to help keep us all safe and healthy. The students could hardly believe it when they learned that E.M.T. Lacy and E.M.T. Erik had brought their ambulance with them! The students all took turns hopping aboard and seeing what the inside of an ambulance looks like! What an amazing experience. Before finishing up at PPA, E.M.T. Lacy, E.M.T. Erik, and Nurse Marissa gifted the students Safety coloring books, Safety sticks, and Frisbees! The PPA students are so lucky to have such amazing and generous helpers in our community! Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this blog post to view all of the photographs from E.M.T. Lacy, E.M.T. Erik, and Nurse Marissa’s visit to PPA.
Speaking of generosity and the community, Thursday marked the PPA field trip to Goehrig’s Bakery! The students trekked down Central Avenue to the local landmark, Goehrig’s Bakery! Over 75 years old, Goehrig’s Bakery has been providing sweet treats to patrons of Jersey City, Hudson County and beyond! The students eyes widened as they entered the bakery and saw all of the delicious delicacies the bakery had to offer! The woman, Zurie, pictured below helped the students learn all about what a day is like working in a bakery! She explained that all day long, the staff works with the baker to prepare amazing treats including (but not limited to) pastries, cakes, cupcakes, tarts, pies, bread, and danishes! During their visit to the bakery, the students observed just who the bakery serves food to in our community as many customers popped in during the visit. Most interesting to the students were the two police officers who had stopped in to pick up cannolis for their police station. How nice!
By far, the most special part of the field trip came as several construction workers entered the bakery. Originally thinking that the construction workers were there for a sweet treat, the teachers suggested that they go ahead of the PPA students to place their order. The construction workers smiled as they proudly and so generously announced that they were not in the bakery to purchase treats for themselves but rather for the students of PPA! The construction workers said that they were so impressed at how well-behaved and friendly the PPA students were while walking to the bakery, they wanted to do something nice for them. Despite Miss Jocelyn’s insistence that it was not necessary, the construction workers so graciously INSISTED on treating the students. After some debate, the students decided that the multi-colored frosted cupcakes were the perfect choice! What an incredible act of kindness and generosity!
On Friday, the students boarded the school bus, greeted their favorite driver, Bus Driver Mike, and headed to the Turtle Back Zoo! The students beat the heat as the cloud coverage provided a nice shade throughout the entire day. Throughout their exploration of the various zoo exhibits, the students observed so many different animals. Whether they were looking at big cats, assorted aquatic life, penguins, wolves, bison, tortoises, they had a blast! Always a highlight, the train proved to still be a nice relaxing break from walking around the zoo. By far, the most exciting new addition to the zoo is the Touch-Tank! They students enjoyed looking at and TOUCHING the sting rays and sharks in the tank. What a great day at the zoo!
