“Letter C is for Counting Week” Blog Recap!

Hello all,

“Letter C is for Counting Week” was by far the Coolest week of the 2016-2017 school year yet!  The students entered school each day with a Crazy amount of Letter C shares! Everything from Cookies, Camping supplies, Coloring books, and Cows were sent in and shared!  There were tons of Letter C books that came in as well!  To help explore the letter C, the students also learned all about counting!  Well, “Letter C is for Counting Week” has come and gone.  Read on below to discover the learning that took place and fun that was had throughout the week!

The students spent both Monday and Tuesday morning working one on one with the teachers to complete their Letter C identification/fine motor activity sheets.  The teachers were so impressed with how easily the new students recognized the letter C and also how well the older students remembered all things “C” during their morning work!  In the afternoon on Monday and Tuesday, the students created the third letter list of the year!  Naturally, the letter C list was full of Creative answers!  As a whole group, the students took turns brainstorming and contributing words that begin with the letter C and also hunted around the classroom for letter C items!

How many C shares do you see?

Answer:  Crab, Cup, Car, Crayons and C!

The students returned to school on Wednesday ready to count!  The teachers decided that it would be fun (and yummy) to make cookies!  These cookies were not just ordinary cookies; these cookies had special toppings on them!  The students faces  lit up as they realized the toppings included chocolate chips, raisins, and M&Ms.  Here is how the students created their Counting Cookie!

First, they tossed a large die to determine the number of each toppings that would be added to the cookie!  Once the number had been determined, the students carefully counted out that particular number of toppings.  Once all of the toppings had been counted out, the numbers were written and the toppings were then glued onto the cookies!  To avoid any art project nibbling, the teachers explained that the glued toppings were not for eating as they handed out several fresh and unglued toppings for the students to enjoy.  What fun (and yummy) morning it was!

The fun continued on Wednesday (and Thursday) afternoon as the students incorporated the theme of the week – counting – into music class!  The student LOVED learning some number play songs including:  Five Little Ducks, Ten Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed, and more!  Here is a video of one of the songs you may hear your child singing at home!

On Thursday, the students were super excited to learn that they would be making a Cute, Colorful, and wearable Counting morning Craft!  The students worked their fingers to select various Colored noodles to string onto a necklace.  Once the necklaces were assembled, the students – of course – were asked to Count the Colors!  Whether they had 3 green, 5 blue, or 10 red noodles, one thing was for sure – they looked awesome!

On Friday morning, the students welcomed some very special guests into the school!  A PPA graduate, along with his older sister and Daddy, visited the classroom to read a story and to report all about the wild and wonderful world of kindergarten! This all-star graduate was happy to answer all of the students questions about kindergarten.  What a lovely morning it was! A big PPA thank you to this fantastic former student and his family for joining us!

The exciting day continued as the students completed their morning work by using their bodies!  The rainy weather outside did not stop our students from getting some exercise in a super fun way! What better way to practice counting than by playing Hopscotch! The students had a BLAST reviewing their numbers and getting some exercise in at the same time!  What a fun morning it was!

Spanish class took place on Thursday and Friday afternoon as the students wrapped up the final week of greetings!  Next week the students will move on to unit two of Spanish class – Los Numeros!  How fitting! 🙂

Also Friday afternoon, the students participated in a technology presentation all about numbers!  They particularly enjoyed learning that their favorite letter-loving robots also enjoy their numbers as well!

Well, that is all for “Letter C is for Counting Week”; it sure was Cool!  As always, thank you for reading and have a fun and safe weekend!
