“Letter D is for Dog Week” Blog Recap!

Hello all

“Letter D is for Dog Week” was dynamic, dynamite and simply delightful! The students showed up more than ready to discuss the theme of the week and dozens of other D things! Some of the share highlights included: ducks, dragons, Dr. Seuss stories, doctor kits, and more! One students even shared a diaper borrowed from a new sibling! Fortunately, the student did not take the Letter D theme too seriously and bring a Dirty Diaper in for share! Thank you to everyone who brought in shares to help reinforce the letter D.

The students spent both Monday and Tuesday morning working one on one with the teachers to complete their Letter D identification/fine motor activity sheets.  The teachers were so impressed with how easily the new students recognized the letter D and also how well the older students remembered all things “D” during their morning work!  In the afternoon on Monday and Tuesday, the students created the fourth letter list of the year!  Naturally, the letter D list was full of Dozens of answers!  As a whole group, the students took turns brainstorming and contributing words that begin with the letter D and also hunted around the classroom for letter D items!

How many D shares do you see?

Answer:  Dog, Dinosaur, Dolphin, Doughnut, D

Also on Tuesday, the student said a very special CONGRATULATIONS and WELCOME BACK to PPA’s beloved Assistant Director/Head Teacher, Miss Jocelyn!  Miss Jocelyn and her husband, Joseph, were married earlier this month and headed off to Hawaii!  While she was away, the PPA students created a special wedding book to present upon her return.  The preschoolers shared some wonderful insight on what love and marriage is all about.  Be sure to read the pages of the book they created below.

The day began as it usually does on Wednesday as the students began their art exploration of the theme of the week – Dogs.  The students spent the morning creating a Doggie-inspired art project.  Later that day, the teacher noticed something amazing had happened.  The students looked a little different.  Their noses were black, their ears were long and floppy and they were covered in spots!  Take a look below to see this Delightful Doggie Transformation that took place!

Also on Wednesday, the students had music class where they learned a super fun finger-play song called:  “Dogs in the Dirt”.  Try it out below!

Ten little doggies went out one day
(10 fingers up)
To dig in the dirt and play, play, play.
(Pretend to dig)
Five were spotted, and five were not,
(Show one hand at a time)
and at dinner time they ate a lot!
(Pretend to eat)

On Thursday, the art exploration of dogs continued as the students discussed the characteristics of dogs.  Through a group conversation, they determined that dogs (usually) have fur or hair on their bodies, long nails on their front and back paws, and big wet noses!  The students created the following fuzzy art project to help them remember what they had learned during their discussion and investigation!

The Halloween excitement began on Friday morning as the students shared their Halloween costume ideas in front of the class!  Also in the morning, the students had a blast singing and dancing along during a Halloween/Dog-inspired music session!  The students LOVED hearing Halloween hits such as: “The Monster Mash” and the “Purple People Eater” along with Dog Songs including: “Who Let The Dogs Out?” and “How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?”.  What a fun morning it was!

Friday afternoon wrapped up with a technology presentation all about the letter D and you guessed it – Dogs! 🙂 The students viewed various photographs of different breeds of dogs and also discussed the importance of always being careful and safe around doggies – they are animals after all!  They observed and discussed the differences and similarities between various breeds!  They used great descriptive words to distinguish between the different dogs.  For example:  Words such as: Curly, Straight, Long, Short, Fluffy and more were mentioned to describe the dogs fur.  They sure did a great job!

Well, that is all for “Letter D is for Dogs Week”.  As always, thank you for reading and have a fun and safe weekend!
