“Letter M is for Mail Week” Blog Recap!

Hello all,

“Letter M is for Mail Week” was certainly the Most Marvelous week of the 2015-2016 school year yet!  The students entered school each day with so Many Letter M shares! Everything from Magnets to Mickey Mouse, Monkeys to Megaphones, and of course, all things Mail/Postal Service were sent in and shared!  Well, “Letter M is for Mail/Postal Service Week” has come and gone.  Read on below to discover the learning that took place and fun that was had throughout the week!

The students spent Tuesday and Wednesday morning working one on one with the teachers to complete their Letter M identification/fine motor activity sheets. The teachers were so impressed with how easily the new students recognized the letter M and also how well the older students remembered all things “M” during their morning work!  In the afternoon on Tuesday and Wednesday, the students created the thirteenth letter list of the year! As a whole group, the students took turns brainstorming and contributing words that begin with the letter M and also hunted around the classroom for letter M items!  With what seemed like millions of letter M items to be found inside PPA, the letter M list was full of Many More answers than other less common letter-weeks prior!   Take a look at the list that Tuesday’s group came up with!

What letter M shares do you see?

Answer:  Motorcycle, Mermaid, Magnets, and Maraca!

“Letter M is for Mail Week” was full of exciting events and surprises!  The first came when the students learned they would be visited by a PPA Daddy guest reader on Wednesday morning!  The Daddy and son duo photographed below picked a very special story to read to the class – Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax.  The environmentally friendly tale proved to be the perfect way to start the day!  A special PPA Thank You to this Daddy for helping us have a Miraculous start to the day!

Another surprise came later on Wednesday as the doorbell rang shortly after rest time had ended.  Miss Taryn accepted a special delivery from the mailman! Miss Jocelyn explained that the package was sent to the students of Park Prep Academy! They could hardly wait to see who it was from and of course, what was inside! Miss Jocelyn mentioned that the way to find out who sent a package is to look at the return address. Boy, were the students surprised when they learned that the package was sent from our beloved teacher, Miss Elizabeth!  The students could hardly wait to tear it open and see what Miss Elizabeth had sent to them! One lucky student was selected to open the package in front of the class and show everyone what was inside!  A bunch of new classroom materials to work and play with including Letter Locks, Sand Shifters and more!  The students could hardly wait to enjoy their Marvelous Mail!  Thank you Miss Elizabeth for organizing such a fun surprise for us all! 🙂

After a discussion about the important job the postal service plays in our community, the students could hardly contain their excitement when they learned they would be creating some mail of their own on Thursday morning!  Each of the students designed an incredible note card with a special message inside!  After drawing marvelous designs or pictures for their note cards front, the students wrote their names on the inside of the note card.  Next, the teachers asked them to whom did they want to send their special mail.  Upon hearing their answers, the teachers wrote the name of the intended recipient on the outside of the envelope!  Parents- please be sure to complete the address!  The students then practiced stuffing an envelope, stamping the return address and even placing the stamp in the top right-hand corner!    The students went home that day with their postcards, which would have the addresses filled in later on!  They could hardly wait to stamp them and place them in the mail!  We hope the recipients enjoy recieving the mail the students made for them – maybe some reply-mail will come back to the students soon!  Look below to see the students in action!

After a week of learning all about the important role the postal service plays in our community, the students felt that a special PPA Thank You was in order for the PPA mail carriers who help bring all the mail and fun packages to PPA each day!  For their morning work on Friday, the students worked together to compose three beautiful letters – one for each mail carrier from the following postal service companies:  United States Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS!  In addition to the letter, the students included some wonderful drawings in the envelope which they will hand deliver to the mail carriers on their next visit to PPA!   The students can hardly wait to hear the doorbell ring next and present the carriers with their “Thank You” cards!  🙂

Spanish class took place on Thursday and Friday afternoons as well as technology presentations all about a day in the life of a mail carrier!  The students got an extra special “Behind the Scenes” look at what really happens inside the Post office as well as what life is like for these very important community helpers!

The fun continued on Friday afternoon as the students welcomed back an old friend who was visiting from the wild world of Kindergarten!  The PPA alum photographed below spent the afternoon with the students answering all of their questions about what kindergarten is like!  It is always so nice seeing old friends!  What a wonderful visit it was!  A special PPA “Thank You” to this former student (and her Mommy) for visiting!  We hope to see you again soon!:)
