“Letter U is for Upside Down Week” Blog Recap!

Hello all,

“Letter U is for Upside Down Week” was utterly unbelievable, ultra-unique and uber-uplifting! Read on below to learn about the fun that was had and learning that took place!

The students spent Monday and Tuesday morning working one on one with the teachers to complete their Letter U identification/fine motor activity pages.  During both Monday and Tuesday afternoon, the students created a Letter U list and went hunting around the classroom for any U in sight! Despite the confusion early on with word suggestions like, “The word ‘You’ starts with U”, the students were able to come up with a lot of great U words!  Although the letter U is not the most common letter in the alphabet, the students managed to fill the share box each day throughout the week!  Well, it is probably more accurate to say that only a few of the shares actually started with the letter U while most of them related to the Upside Down theme! Take a look below to see some of the Letter U shares the students brought in this week.

Letter U MW List and Shares

Do YOU see any U shares?

Answer:  Umbrella, Letter U, Unicorn and a Ukulele

Wednesday morning was spent discussing the letter U theme of the week – Upside Down!  Much to the surprise of the students, the teachers did not call them over to do morning work during their activity stations.  As they began getting ready for outdoor playtime at the park, the students were utterly confused.  While putting on their jackets, some of the students reminded the teachers that they had yet to do their morning work.  The teachers smiled as they explained that morning work would actually take place OUTSIDE that day!  Thanks to some help from the strong teachers of PPA, the students were lifted and flipped upside down on the monkey bars of the playground for their photos. Here are some of the highlights!  Needless to say, they had a GREAT time completing this morning work activity!  🙂

During the afternoon on Wednesday, the students had Spanish class where they continued to expand their La Transportación (Transportation) vocabulary. Seeing that it was Upside Down week, they decided to incorporate the theme and learn the names for some animals that hang upside down including el murciélago (bat) and la pereza (sloth).

Speaking of murciélagos (bats), Thursday morning began with a reading of the story, The Bat Who Wore Glasses. Miss Taryn came over and asked why the students were reading a book about bats on U Week. The students quickly reminded her that bats hang upside down! After the story, the students created the following “Upside Down Bat” art project!

After spending the morning investigating all about bats, the students participated in a technology presentation all about the Letter U and of course, Bats!  They also loved seeing their classmates Upside Down photographs from earlier in the week!  Wow!  What a great week “Letter U is for Upside Down” Week “turned” out to be!  🙂  As always, we thank you for reading. Have a wonderful weekend!
