Hello all,
“Letter C is for Cooking” week was colorful, comical, creative and certainly cool! The students learned all about the letter C and enjoyed eating the food they cooked throughout the week! Read on below to learn about all the fun that was had and learning that took place!
The students arrived at school on Tuesday and Wednesday and dove right into the swing of things as they headed into their morning stations. They also completed their letter C tracing/writing identification activities. During the afternoons, the students worked together to brainstorm a bountiful list of letter C words! Take a look below to see what they came up with – wow, that is a lot of C’s! The students also went “hunting” for Letter C’s around the school. Believe it or not, they found C’s ALL OVER the place – C’s in the cabinets, C’s on the bookshelves, C’s on their Clothing – there were C’s EVERYWHERE! Take a look at this photo below, how many C’s do you “C” in this photograph?
Answer: Cheese, Cookie, Cow, Safety Cone, Ice Cream Cone, and Chalk!
On Thursday, the students were ready to get cooking! Instead of an art project, the students prepared and cooked their very own tasty lunchtime Roll-Up. Whether they selected turkey and cheese, ham and cheese, or just cheese for the Roll-Up, the students had a blast assembling, rolling, warming, and eating the meal they had prepared for themselves! What a fun (and easy) delicious snack!
On Thursday afternoon, the students participated in Spanish class where they completed the final week of their “Greeting” vocabulary. After practicing saying Por Favor (Please), Gracias (Thank You), and De Nada (You’re Welcome), the PPA students now know how to be extra polite in both English and Spanish!
Friday was Picture Day at Park Prep! The students came to school dressed to impress! Throughout the morning, the students worked in morning activity stations while awaiting their name to be called and portrait to be taken. They did a wonderful job posing for their school pictures, both class and individual shots. The fun continued on Friday afternoon as the students were greeted by a special visitor – Jenna Stock, RD, a Registered Dietitian from Shoprite of Hoboken!
Miss Jenna had heard that the PPA students were hard at work learning all about the Letter C and Cooking throughout the week and she wanted to lend them a hand! Miss Jenna greeted the students of PPA and then led a very exciting discussion about what Dietitians do. She explained that Dietitians are people who go to school to learn all about food and the way food works inside our bodies! The PPA students, having just studied the human body during Letter B Week, impressed Miss Jenna with their knowledge of the various parts of the body involved in taking in and breaking down the food that we eat!
Speaking of eating, Miss Jenna informed that students that she knew of a healthy and delicious snack that she loved to make with children – Yogurt Fruit Kabobs! She asked if the PPA students were interested in helping prepare it with her. Faster than you can say, “Cooking is fun!” the PPA students all shouted, “WE CAN HELP YOU!” and the prepping/”cooking” activity began!
Working in small groups, the students followed Miss Jenna’s instructions and assembled their fruit kabob to their liking. The choices included apples, bananas, green grapes, and red grapes – talk about some colorful kabobs! 🙂 Once the kabobs had been assembled, the students then rolled their kabobs into some Greek yogurt! Take a look at the photographs below, judging from the smiles on their faces it is clear that the PPA students LOVED Miss Jenna’s delicious and healthy snack!
A special PPA Thank You to Miss Jenna for spending the afternoon with us and teaching us the benefits of feeding and fueling our body with healthy food and snacks! We hope you had as much fun with us as we did with you! 🙂
Well, that may be the end of “Letter C is for Cooking Week” but you can keep the cooking fun going at home all year long! Not only is cooking with Mommy and Daddy a fun activity, it is also a great way to reinforce mathematical concepts such as measurement! Happy Cooking everyone! As always, thank you for reading and see you next week!
