Hello all,
“Letter M is for Moon Week” was certainly the Most Marvelous week of the 2016-2017 school year yet! The students entered school each day with so Many letter M shares! Everything from Magnets to Mickey Mouse, Monkeys to Megaphones, and of course, all things Moon were sent in and shared! Well, “Letter M is for Moon Week” has come and gone. Read on below to discover the learning that took place and fun that was had throughout the week!
The students spent Monday and Tuesday morning working one on one with the teachers to complete their Letter M identification/fine motor activity sheets. The teachers were so impressed with how easily the new students recognized the letter M and also how well the older students remembered all things “M” during their morning work! In the afternoon on Tuesday and Wednesday, the students created the thirteenth letter list of the year! As a whole group, the students took turns brainstorming and contributing words that begin with the letter M and also hunted around the classroom for letter M items! With what seemed like millions of letter M items to be found inside PPA, the letter M list was full of Many More answers than other less common letter-weeks prior!
Do you see any M shares?
Answer: Magnets, Maraca, Monkey, Markers, and M!
Wednesday morning began with a reading of Becky Ward’s adorable book, Spaceman Sam. In the story, Spaceman or Astronaut Sam and his dog, Rigby, prepare for their rocket’s launch into space! The children helped countdown from ten for the rocket’s take-off! With the push of a button, a little rocket ship pops out from the back of the book. Just when the story seems like it is over, the launched rocket ship opens up to reveal the second half of the story. After hearing the story, the children learned that they would be just like real astronauts as they learned all about the moon and outer space throughout the week! They also found out that they would be turning into real Spaceboys and Spacegirls, just like Sam from the story! With a little help from a camera, the children created and decorated their space helmets using glittery star stickers. Needless to say, they were a huge hit with both the children and their parents!
The students exploration of the moon continued on Thursday as the students investigated some high definition photographic images of the moon. Of particular note were the dark patches on the gray moon. Upon further investigation, the students learned that just like our planet, Earth, the moon has mountains, craters, and valleys!
To help them remember the many fun moon facts they learned, the students created their own mini-moon art project! The students first used gray sponge paint to create the dark spots (craters) and then, for fun, added some glow in the dark sponge paint. Once dried, the moon(s) proved to be very exciting – particularly during rest time! 🙂
After music and Spanish class on Wednesday and Thursday, the students participated in a technology presentation all about – you guessed it – the moon! They particularly loved viewing high definition photographs of the moon’s surface and watching astronauts bounce around on the moon! They also learned an amazing fun fact about the moon’s glow… or lack thereof rather! Take a listen below to hear the catchy tune that explains why the moon “glows”. 🙂
On Friday morning, the students created the first ever PPA batch of Moon Dough! What is Moon Dough you ask? Only the Most Marvelous type of dough in the universe! The students spent the morning Mixing and Measuring the necessary ingredients to create the glittery dough! Since Moon Dough does not require baking, the students were able to get doughy right away! What a Miraculous way to end the week!
Well, that is all for “Letter M is for Moon Week” – what a marvelous week it was! As always, thank you for reading and have a wonderful and safe weekend! See you next week!
