Hello all,
“Letter U is for Under the Sea Week” was utterly unbelievable, unimaginably unique and uber-uplifting! Read on below to learn about the fun that was had and learning that took place!
Although the letter U is not the most common letter in the alphabet, the students managed to fill the sharebox each day throughout the week! Only a few of the shares actually started with U’s, however, many shares related to the Under the Sea theme! It seemed like every single species of sea creature was brought in! Crabs, lobsters, clams, sharks, jellyfish, turtles, whales, to name a few. Equally as popular as the sea creatures listed above was Ariel from the Disney hit movie, The Little Mermaid! Despite the confusion early on with word suggestions like “You starts with U”, the students were able to come up with a lot of great U words for their U list on Monday and Tuesday afternoons! In fact, these city kids even added a new letter U word to the list – Uber, the ride-sharing car service! 🙂
Can you name any U shares in the photo above?
Answer: Uggs, Umbrella, Underwear book, Letter U and Uno game!
Also on Tuesday this week, the students were visited by an Oma and Opa (Grandma and Grandpa in German). The Oma featured below came in to read a story to the class! What a special way to start the day! A big “PPA Thank You” to this Oma and Opa for visiting; we hope you had as much fun as we did!
Wednesday was the first craft day of the week and what better ocean creature to start off the crafts than an eight-armed friend, the octopus! The students selected their color octopus and then began assembling him. The final touch was to add Fruit Loops to replicate little suction cups that are found on the arms of all octopuses. (FYI – octopuses do not have tentacles; they have arms. Tentacles are longer than arms and only have suction cups at the ends)
During the afternoon, the students had music class followed by Spanish class where they continued reviewing their new vocabulary unit Mi Cuerpo (My Body). They even combined music class and Spanish class at one point during “Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas, y Pies” or “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”. Click below to try it yourself at home!
The learning and fun continued on Thursday as the students created a special classroom bulletin board that combined the theme of the week (Under the Sea) and also our new season – Spring! Take a look below to see the students in action!
Speaking of fun, the students had a BLAST creating their morning work on Friday. In small groups, the students headed over to the work table and found a few yummy ingredients: graham crackers, frosting, Goldfish crackers, and some gel icing. What on Earth could they be doing? The teachers explained that the students would be creating a yummy underwater scene using the frosting as the water, the Goldfish crackers as the fish, the graham crackers as the sand! Naturally, the ocean needed some plant-life! With a little help from some green gel icing, the underwater scenes came to life! The students loved designing their Under the Sea snacks; they gobbled them right up! Yummy!
To wrap up the week, the students participated in a technology presentation all about life under the sea! First, they started off by seeing some real-life underwater footage from the IMAX Under the Sea DVD, narrated by Jim Carrey. The students eyes widened as they watched the amazing footage from the underneath the sea! Enjoy a different “Under the Sea” clip below! Speaking of familiar songs, the students also enjoyed hearing The Beatles’ hit, Octopus’s Garden.
Well, that’s all for “Letter U is for Under the Sea” Week. As always, thank you for reading and have a wonderful (and safe) weekend!
