“Spanish Review Week” Blog Recap!

Hello all,

Believe it or not, the 2015-2016 PPA school year is nearly coming to a close! With the entire alphabet behind them, the students moved on to another area of focus throughout the year – Spanish class! Taking on all eight units of study, the students sure were busy reviewing all of the concepts and vocabulary discussed throughout the entire year! Read on below to learn about the fun that was had and learning that took place during Spanish Review Week!

The students came to school with TONS of Spanish shares this past week.  They brought in different animales, Spanish instruments such as castanets and maracas, as well as various toy vehicles like camiónes (truck) and carros (cars).  Of course, everyone’s favorite Spanish speaking cartoon characters, Dora and Diego, also made appearances in the share box throughout the week!

Seeing that the end of the school year is rapidly approaching, the teachers used Monday (and Tuesday), the day designated for La Familia (Family) vocabulary to return some of the students’ work being displayed around the classroom.  The teachers took down the “Family Portraits” that were drawn during September’s “All About Me Week”.  For their morning work, the students were called over to view these pieces of art and recreate them!  The students giggled as they looked at some of their drawings from way back in September.  After, the students labeled their drawings with the following words for various family members – Madre (Mother), Padre (Father), y Hermano/a (Brother/Sister).  Once the portraits were completed, the students all noted how differently they draw now!  The teachers explained that this was because they were getting bigger and growing up!  The students were so pleased!  Take a look below to see some of the changes in drawing abilities over the past year.  It is really quite impressive!

Tuesday’s morning activity took place inside (due to rain) as the students reviewed their Los Numeros (Numbers) vocabulary by putting a “Spanish-spin” on some of their favorite outdoor playground games!  “¿Qué Hora Es, Señor Zorro?” (What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?) and Rayuela (Hopscotch) proved to be perfect and extra fun ways to review los numerous!  Also on Tuesday, the students spent the morning playing assorted Spanish activity games.  Whether it is was a Spanish matching activity game, Bilingual Bingo, or Simón Dice (Simon Says), the students sure had a blast!

Wednesday’s unit of focus was Los Colores (colors) and what better way to review the color vocabulary than art!  Dressed in artist smocks, the students selected tre colores (three colors) to paint a masterpiece with!

Thursday’s unit of focus was Mi Cuerpo (or My Body).  What better way to practice identifying the vocabulary of various body parts than with a musical rendition of “Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas, Pies” (Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes) or “The Hokey Pokey” in Spanish!  Why don’t you stand up and try it now.

You put your CABEZA in!  You put your CABEZA out!  You put your CABEZA in and you shake it all about!  You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around! That’s what it’s all about!

Now try it with…

BRAZOS (arms)

PIES (feet)

and CUERPO (BODY)

Things were really cooking on Friday as the students reviewed the Yummiest Spanish unit of all – La Comida (food).  Taking the following four vocabulary words:  Quesadilla, Tortilla, Queso (cheese), and Pollo (chicken).  The students prepared and baked a yummy snack to enjoy later in the day – Quesadilla con Pollo y Queso (Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla).  Look below to see the students in action!  Yummy!  The students certainly enjoyed their delicious homemade treat!

During the afternoon on both Thursday and Friday, the students and teachers discussed the week ahead – Student Choice Week!  “Student Choice Week” is an entire week where the students will be choosing and planning the entire curriculum!  Through a discussion, the students determined the various topics they would be investigating next week.  Be sure to check back next Friday to see how the entire “Student Choice Week” unfolds!

After discussing “Student Choice Week” on Friday, the students participated in a technology presentation where they reviewed their vocabulary but also had the opportunity to witness some of their favorite classroom storybooks come to life – en Español – in Spanish! Do you recognize this story?

Well, that is all for “Spanish Review Week” and Spanish class for the 2015-2016 school year! What a wonderful año (year) of Spanish learning and fun it was! As always, thank you for reading and have a wonderful and safe weekend!
