“WaCkY ScIeNcE Week” Blog Recap!

Hello all,

“WaCkY sCiEnCe Week” has come and gone and boy, was it great! Read on below to learn all about the fun that was had and learning that took place!

On Monday and Tuesday morning, the students headed out to the Sprinkler/Water Park and Playground for some fun in the sun!

For their morning art project on Monday, the students each created a beautiful masterpiece at the classroom art easel!

On Tuesday, the students used assorted craft materials to create an adorable summer popsicle art project!

On Wednesday, the students hoped aboard the PPA school bus and headed to the Liberty Science Center!  The students could hardly believe their eyes as they explored and investigated the various exhibits of the center including, but not limited to:  Illusion:  Nothing Is As It Seems, Eat or Be Eaten, Infection Connection, Wildlife Challenge, or Our Hudson Home!  Whether they were crawling on spider webs, expanding their minds, or just plain having fun, it was clear that the students LOVED their time at the LSC!  Be sure to visit the link located at the bottom of this blog post to view all of the photos from Wednesday’s trip!

The WaCkY sCiEnCe fun continued as the students returned to camp and began EXPERIMENTING!  On Thursday, the students created GoOeY GaK!  In order to get started, the students began by adding glitter glue, regular glue, and water into a bowl.  The teachers explained that they had a special ingredient which the students could add to the gluey water mixture to cause a “REACTION”.  The teachers explained that in scientific experimenting, a reaction is something that happens as a result – in this case, a result of something being added to the gluey mixture.  Scientists who are conducting experiments observe reactions to figure out how things work!  After hypothesizing (or guessing) what reaction might happen when the magic ingredient was added, the students could hardly wait to see the experiment unfold!  Once the special ingredient was added, the soupy gluey mixture quickly turned into a big squishy blob of GoOeY GaK!  The students did a fantastic job discussing complex science ideas, including states of matter and more!  What a fun and messy day it was!

The WaCkY ScIeNcE fun continued on Friday as the students spent the day discussing the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse that will happen across our continent, North America, next week!  On Monday, August 21st, the United States will fall under the path of a total solar eclipse.  A total solar eclipse occurs when the disk of the moon appears to completely cover the disk of the sun in the sky.  The Total Solar Eclipse will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles wide.  In New Jersey, the eclipse will begin at 1:22 p.m. and end around 4:00 p.m.  At 2:45, we will see the “climax” where approximately 75% of the sun will be blocked.  NOTE:  BE CAREFUL – Looking directly into a solar eclipse can cause damage to your eyes.  Certified eye protection is recommended.

The teachers and students participated in a discussion and technology presentation to help learn a bit more about what happens during a solar eclipse!  Here is a nice (and a bit goofy) explanation for you to view! 🙂

After learning about the solar eclipse, the students created a super neat art project using chalk to create their own mini-eclipse to take home!  Here is how they did it!

Wow!  Talk about an INCREDIBLE week of camp!  We cannot wait to see what next week – Sport and Games Week – has in store!  A special PPA Thank You to all of the PPA parents that were such an integral part this past week!  Your time and efforts are appreciated more than you realize!  Well, that is all for this week of camp.  As always, thank you for reading.  Have a fun and safe weekend!
